Yah. Must be a discrepancy during manufacture. The rest of my notes sound pretty good and it has a decent range but the 1st octave B just doesn't want to behave. Oh well. This instrument will be good to practice on and I'll keep an eye out for a better one on Ebay

If I do the B on that chart (the standard B) it's really really sharp most of the time. If I do the fingering suggested to make it slightly flatter it starts to sound weird.

I remember having to use alternate fingerings for Eb.
The Yamaha fingerings will be a good start http://www.recorder-fingerings.com/en/F.php?Tibia=mYam-4B1KB-Bar, much closer than the standard enclosed finger chart.
Regards,
Ian

The airyness was a bad on my part. I have discovered my first octave B to be kind of out of tune and weak so I've had to play around with some alternative fingerings to get it to play right.

Hi John,
I didn't remember any issue with the upper register, so I've just had a play. I had no issues all the way to high G; maybe I've just got a good one.
Obviously I don't have anything to compare against, but for me it's fine.
Regards,
Ian

Hey, I just got a Woodnote bass recorder myself and was wondering if you had issues with it sounding really airy in the upper register?

Glad it helped.
We have a couple from the U3A play with us in our recorder consort at Dunstable Music Centre, so yes it not just for kids; it keeps the mind and fingers nimble.
Regards,

Thanks for info re woodnote bass. I have been borrowing a Yamaha but wanted something cheaper.

I play with the U3A so recorder is becoming something for the old as well as the young. Many people were surprised at just how lovely the consort sounded.

Hi Charlie,
Yes, I am very please with the Woodnote as an instrument. Visually it appears to be identical to the knick neck bass of a certain Japanese manufacturer whose name starts with Y. It is in matt black plastic rather than the black and white of the Y*.
Quality wise it is very good. Unfortunately, one day just before going on for a concert, one of the springs under the keys broke and I have had to replace it. This is however the same fault on the Y* bass recorders as well, this is described at Saunders Recorders http://www.saundrecs.co.uk/ybaskey.htm, so I don't hold that against it.
It takes a bit of breath to play, but is in my opinion easier to play than the Aulos bass that the music center has.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Ian
