Celebration Day

OK, this should have been posted on Thursday, so I’m not really doing well at keeping up to date.

The company I work for has recently split from its larger conglomarate and on Wednesday morning was listed on the NYSE.

On Thursday, the company laid on a BBQ at lunchtime and then arranged an afternoon of team games with a pub game theme as part of the global celebrations. It was great fun, even if our team didn’t do particularly well. It’s not often you get paid to spend the afternoon playing.

Searching for ET

I saw a post on Go! Smell The Flowers the other day when I joined BlogCatalog that reminded me of something I haven’t posted about.

About 5 years ago in June 2002, I downloaded and installed the Seti@Home software. The Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project uses spare time on your computer to analyse the signals from the radio telescope at Arecibo Observatory searching for signs of intelligence.

In early 2005, a new version of the software was released. This version ran on the BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) platform, which was design to be modular allowing clients for other purposes to be released. I’m still searching for aliens, but I’m also taking part in the following projects:

  • ClimatePrediction – experiment to try and produce a forecast of the climate in the 21st century
  • Einstein – search for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors
  • Predictor – predict protein structure from protein sequence to address critical biomedical questions of protein-related diseases
  • Rosetta – determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases

BoincStats

You can just do this individually or join one of the many teams that do this competitively. Being a bit of a nutter with a liking for Monty Python, I had to join The Knights Who Say Ni! team, who are without exception stark raving mad. This explains my name in the team; the Knights are searching for a Shrubbery and with the name Hedges what else could I be other than ‘I am a Shrub’.

Ouch moment for BlogCatalog

I checked out my neighborhood at BlogCatalog this evening and got a bit of a shock. Every thing was blank, I had no details in my profile, no messages in my shoutbox, no friends and no neighborhoods, even my avatar had gone.

It appears that they had suffered a data loss on their server and had had to restore back to 25th June. The blog data and user information were recovered up to 6th July. The net result of this was, that as I only joined late last week, I had lost everything except the fact that I had joined.

I have reset my profile and avatar and rejoined as many neighborhoods as I could remember and hopefully as I get some new visitors the widget will start to fill up again.

Mediaeval Baebes

I thought I’d have a look at the Mediaeval Baebes website this morning before we see them at the Joust in a couple of weeks.

I knew it had been a while since I checked their site out, about the time of my post about Musical Taste back in April. So, it was a bit of a surprise to be greeted by a new picture and realise that I didn’t know some of the faces. It appears that 3 of the members including 2 of the founder members had left in May.

The other thing that was disappointing was to find that they had played in Milton Keynes, about 25 minutes away, at the beginning of May. I know that I should have checked the site, but I’ve got so used to RSS feeds, that some of the old sites I visit have been forgotten.

I first came across the Mediaeval Baebes in December 1997, when their first album Salva Nos was getting a lot of airplay on ClassicFM. I instantly became a fan.

We first saw the Mediaeval Baebes live at the Joust in 2005, where they signed a copy of their album Mirabilis.

There have been several changes in lineup over the years, I have tried to include all.

Cylindra Sapphire

Cylindra Sapphire.

Founder member of Mediaeval Baebes in 1996 until May 2007.

It will be interesting to see what the change of lineup has done to the arrangement of some of the songs. It seems from their guestbook that everyone is quite happy with the results. I wish the departing baebes all the best with their future endevors and look forward to some good weather for the Joust.

They are touring cathedrals this year. They performed at St. Leonards, London last Friday and will be at Coventry Cathedral and Ely Cathedral next Friday and Saturday. The remainder of the tour will be in November and December, it’s a shame that none of the locations are closer. Something like St. Albans Cathedral would have been great.

[Edit 7th September 2007] Update from Karen Lupton Garcia via my plugoo widget: ‘[Karen Lupton Garcia] UPDATE FOR YOU! > “Hi Ian, started Mediaeval Baebes 1995 and I stayed till 99 (last gig – the eclipse). I am now a teacher in Glasgow’s East End, married to Ted (former guitarist, Feline, Horsepower) lawyer -Pinsents” ‘
Thanks for the update Karen.

What colour is your brain?

I saw this over at jmb’s blog and had to give it a go:

Your Brain is Yellow

Of all the brain types, yours is the most intellectual. You crave mental stimulation, and your thoughts tend to very complex. Your thoughts tend to be innovative and
cutting edge, though many people don’t understand them.
You tend to spend a lot of time thinking about science, architecture, and communication.

What Color Is Your Brain?

I think they may have me there, definately a thinker.
