International Education Week

International flagsThe school is holding its second International Education Week this week. Countrywide it is International Education Month in November.

The idea is to teach the children more about other countries in terms of their location, culture, language, food and lifestyle. Each day is assigned a different continent and the children are asked to dress in either colours of any country’s flag from the continent or traditional dress / sportsware from a country.

We will remember them

For The Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

I’m an Uncle again

My brother and his wife had their second son late yesterday, so now I have two nephews. Timing being everything, it was a different birthday present for her.

Digital cameras

I’ve decided, the time has come for me to move to digital. Just really for the convenience. I’m always conscious when taking photos that I’ve got to pay to have them developed.

I’m going to change to a digital SLR and so have spent some time researching what my options are. I narrowed the field down to the following makes Olympus, Canon and Nikon.

Initially my thought was get an Olympus and then get an adaptor which would allow me to use my existing 35mm film lenses with it. This would only work in a totally manual mode, but I didn’t see that as a big issue. Then I started thinking ‘was I choosing this camera in my mind just so I didn’t have to invest in new lenses’ and ‘were my lenses really that good that a modern digital lens wouldn’t be as good or better’. The more I thought about it the more I concluded that my lenses were fine for what I was using, but they are old technology and weren’t exceptional even in their day.

Upgraded to WordPress 2.3.1

I saw last night that version 2.3.1 had been released and included some security fixes, so I downloaded it this morning.

I installed the maintenance mode plugin on my test blog to check it out and then put my test blog into maintenance mode while I performed the upgrade. There was a newer version of NoFollow Free available, so I downloaded that for installation at the same time.

The upgrade was very straight forward, backup my database using phpMyAdmin at my website host and then upload the new files. After the files were uploaded, I went to the upgrade page, which confirmed that my database was already up to date.
